Smokey the Dark Horse by resistanceispointles Smokey the Dark Horse by resistanceispointles
Murieleejones - Took the original photo of her horse in the dark on a cheap camera(her words). I get the impression from her note with the picture she was not too happy with the end photo! I think it is one of the best Horse Photo's on DA! it is great, I think what she took was one of those ahots you could never ever stage and they just happen! Maybe a little playing in photo shop to remove some of the illuminated dust hanging in the air, otherwise she took a great picture.

I asked her if I could draw her Horse and she has allowed me to do so, Thankyou.

I drew it on A3 Murano paper using only 3 pastel colours, light grey, dark grey and white.

Here is the link to the original,

This is also my One Hundreth Deviation!

Dont let the owner hear you say that! Probably down to how I drew the horse but when I saw the original photo I couldnt resist drawing as I thought it was one of the best horse photo's I had seen in a long time.

Many thanks for your kind words.

this is an amazing drawing, truely stunning but i think the photo you've taken has blured the details a bit.

Yes I agree! I find it very difficult to photo or scan anything on black paper! It either flares parts of the paper as a dark grey or it blurrs slightly, I cant seem to get it correct even in natural daylight!

Thanks very much for your comments

Have you tried including some of your surroundings in the picture. ~If you alow your desk to creap in and take the best flash free photo you can then photoshop should be able to auto correct the shades fairly acceptably

I usualy allow a couple of inches or so all the way round then photo shop crop it, my son is a proffesional photographer and he has tried to clean up the grey for me but he tells me it would be best under studio light to get the black black!
Takes me all my time to find the cropping tool!

Interesting monochromatic piece. I like the idea of drawing with a white pencil or colour on a black paper. I've once tried to draw a black cat in similar way.

I enjoyed it, it makes you look hard at the picture to figure out what to draw and what not to draw!
Plan to do some more!

Wow, you did good Jeff! I take it that Murano paper is black? I do really love the white against the black. How did you get all those details in? Just great!! :iconponytrophyplz:

Thanks, yes I find it difficult to photo or scan black paper as it reflects the light badly! even in natural day light it gives a greyish flare and if you scan it, it looks awful.
If you check out Muriels original photo you will see all I had to do was pick out the hi lighted areas of the Horse and leave the rest out! I found it very easy to do, prior to starting I was thinking that it would be a huge job and take me days, turned out to be quite the opposite taking only 3 hours and I found I was looking for detail that wasnt actually in the picture, so ended up enjoying this one alot.
Thanks for your comments also
